Madinah is the second most important Islamic pilgrimage destination after Makkah and was the first power base of Islam during the faith’s first century. It also serves as the capital of the Al Madinah Province. Madinah is home to the three oldest mosques in Islam, and has a population of over 1.6 million.
Madinah is located in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia, 160km inland from the Red Sea and 447km north of Makkah. It is situated at elevation 603 meters above sea level.
Madinah has a hot desert climate. The summer lasts from May to the beginning of October with an average daily high temperature of 39°C. The cold season lasts from November to February with an average daily high temperature of 27°C.
